CVE-2014-0001 | When the server attacks the client Imagine a receptionist crashing over an absurdly long name. A malicious database server could send a long version string that overflowed a buffer in a MySQL/MariaDB client. The official record describes an application crash and possible arbitrary code execution. The vulnerable code was in client/mysql.cc: this is not a claim that an unauthenticated attacker could take over the database server. The lesson: trust boundaries run both ways. Clients must validate server replies too.
