NVD description

VMware ESXi contains an authentication bypass vulnerability. A malicious actor with sufficient Active Directory (AD) permissions can gain full access to an ESXi host that was previously configured to use AD for user management https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2012/09/joining-vsphere-hosts-to-active-directory.html by re-creating the configured AD group ('ESXi Admins' by default) after it was deleted from AD.

    Active Exploitation

CVEs Explainer #11 CVE-2024-37085 (VMware ESXi Authentication Bypass) A high-severity flaw in VMware ESXi hypervisors that allowed attackers with sufficient Active Directory permissions to gain full administrative access by simply re-creating a deleted AD group (default: "ESXi Admins"). Microsoft researchers uncovered the vulnerability, which was actively exploited by ransomware groups to encrypt virtual machines at scale. It's a stark reminder that identity infrastructure misconfigurations can have catastrophic consequences.

    Post summary

The text describes CVE-2024-37085 as an ESXi authentication bypass and reports that ransomware groups actively exploited it to encrypt virtual machines. No PoC, named exploit tool, or remediation is mentioned.
