🚨 VCENTER CREDENTIAL THEFT — CVE-2026-41012 CAN TURN TRAFFIC INTERCEPTION INTO COMPLETE VIRTUALIZATION TAKEOVER An attacker positioned between BOSH Director and VMware vCenter could capture administrator credentials during ordinary infrastructure operations. CyberSignal Priority: 🔴 VERY HIGH 📅 CVE published August 29, 2026 🆔 CVE-2026-41012 📊 CVSS v4: 8.8 HIGH 🏷️ Cloud Security · VMware · Credential Theft · Virtualization A serious certificate-validation flaw affects: BOSH vSphere CPI < 98.0.6 🔎 What happened The BOSH Director communicates with vCenter while performing cloud infrastructure operations. Because the connection did not properly validate the vCenter endpoint, an attacker capable of intercepting that traffic could impersonate the vCenter REST API. Then: BOSH Director ↓ fake vCenter endpoint ↓ HTTP Basic authentication ↓ vCenter administrator username + password captured ↓ administrative infrastructure access Cloud Foundry warns that successful credential theft could expose: VMs datastores networks multiple deployments managed by the compromised vCenter. ⚔️ Important detail The exposure is NOT limited to a rare configuration operation. Cloud Foundry says it can occur on: EVERY CPI CALL including routine deployment activity. Supplying a CA certificate alone is also not sufficient to mitigate the issue. 🧠 Why this matters vCenter is a control plane. Compromising one administrator credential can therefore be radically more valuable than compromising one virtual machine. Instead of attacking workloads individually: compromise management plane ↓ control infrastructure beneath the workloads. ⚠️ Important caveat This is not an internet-scale unauthenticated RCE. The attacker must first be in a position capable of intercepting communication between: BOSH Director ↔ vCenter. That requirement materially changes exploitability. The Cloud Foundry advisory itself was first issued August 27; the CVE record was published August 29. 🛡️ Defender action Upgrade immediately to: BOSH vSphere CPI 98.0.6+ Then review: vCenter authentication logs network paths between BOSH and vCenter unexpected certificate behavior administrator-account activity new or modified VMs privilege changes CyberSignal Insight: Compromise the virtualization control plane and hundreds of workloads can become one attack surface.
