#Ciberseguridad #CVE #SeguridadDigital #PYMEsMX https://thehackernews.com/2026/07/critical-openwrt-dhcpv6-flaw-could-let.html

In this episode of IT SPARC Cast – CVE of the Week, @JohnBarger and @loudoggeek examine CVE-2026-53921, a critical OpenWRT vulnerability that allows unauthenticated remote code execution as root through the DHCPv6 service. While OpenWRT is often associated with home labs and hobbyists, it’s also embedded in enterprise Wi-Fi, ISP gateways, IoT devices, industrial equipment, SD-WAN appliances, and OpenWiFi platforms. The discussion explores why OpenWRT is far more common in enterprise environments than many IT teams realize, how Shadow IT and embedded devices complicate vulnerability management, and why understanding what’s running on your network is just as important as patching it. openwrt fixed a pre-auth stack overflow in its dhcpv6 server back in june. the CVE only landed in nvd this morning, so nvd fed scanners are just now starting to flag it (CVE-2026-53921, 9.8 from github as CNA) odhcpd is the default dhcpv6/RA server on openwrt and runs as root. one unauthenticated dhcpv6 request overflows a stack buffer while the reply is built. the reporter calls code exec realistic since a lot of embedded builds ship without stack canaries or ASLR. whats public is crash reproducers. no known exploitation, not in KEV the 9.8 is scored AV:N but in practice its adjacent. stock openwrt only runs the dhcpv6 server on lan, and the default wan zone rejects inbound udp 547. so the attacker is anyone on a segment odhcpd serves: lan, guest wifi, iot vlans. openwrts own release notes say network-adjacent fixed in 25.12.5 (june 30) and 24.10.8 (july 26), along with a use-after-free (CVE-2026-53918) and a stack memory leak (CVE-2026-53920) in the same code. careful with the nvd text, it says patched in 25.12. 25.12.0 through 25.12.4 are still vulnerable where the exposure actually sits: - vendor firmware built on openwrt. plenty of routers and APs ship forks that trail upstream by months, and their version numbers wont tell u. ask whether their odhcpd has the june fixes - openwrt boxes nobody has touched since spring if u cant upgrade yet, turn the dhcpv6 server off on guest and other untrusted segments and run slaac only there https://github.com/openwrt/odhcpd/security/advisories/GHSA-7fwx-hhrg-3496

    Post summary

The text provides a detailed technical analysis of CVE-2026-53921 (pre-auth stack overflow in OpenWrt odhcpd), confirms public crash reproduces exist, reports no known exploitation or KEV listing, and emphasizes specific patched versions (25.12.5, 24.10.8) and network-level workarounds.

OpenWrt'nin DHCPv6 Açığı İçin Yama Yayınlandı, İki Ek Açık Daha Ortaya Çıktı Daha önce duyurduğumuz OpenWrt DHCPv6 açığı CVE-2026-53921 için resmi yama yayınlandı; ayrıca aynı bileşende iki yeni açık daha tespit edildi! • CVE-2026-53921 (CVSS 9,8), odhcpd bileşeninin dhcpv6_ia_handle_IAs() ve build_ia() fonksiyonlarında bulunan 512 baytlık bir tampon taşması; UDP 547 portuna özel hazırlanmış bir DHCPv6 REQUEST paketi göndererek root ayrıcalıklarıyla çalışan bileşende tetiklenebiliyor. • Aynı pakette CVE-2026-62948 (DHCPv6 hostname enjeksiyonu) ve CVE-2026-62947 (path traversal) adlı iki ek açık da kapatıldı. • Birçok yönlendiricide stack koruması ve ASLR bulunmadığından, bu açığın istismarı özellikle gerçekçi kabul ediliyor; kullanıcıların OpenWrt 24.10.8 veya 25.12.5 sürümüne güncelleme yapması gerekiyor. CVE'nin orijinal keşfi yapay zeka destekli bir kod denetiminden gelmişti, şimdi gerçek dünya istismar potansiyeli netleşen bu açık için güncelleme yapmayan yönlendiriciler ciddi risk altında. #SiberGüvenlik #OpenWrt #RCE

    PoC

A single DHCPv6 REQUEST to UDP 547 yields root on OpenWrt routers. CVE-2026-53921 carries a 9.8 CVSS score. The flaw sits in odhcpd, the DHCPv6 daemon enabled by default and running as root. In dhcpv6-ia.c a 512-byte stack buffer named pdbuf receives the IA reply. build_ia() checks only for 16 bytes of space before writing a 22-byte status option. dhcpv6_ia_handle_IAs() writes 36 bytes for RECONF_ACCEPT plus the auth path with no length check at all. Both sites overflow the same buffer. Most embedded targets lack stack canaries and ASLR, so the overwrite produces reliable code execution rather than a crash. Public Python PoCs of roughly 120 lines each configure odhcpd via UCI, start the daemon, and trigger either site. The same 24.10.8 release also fixed CVE-2026-62948, a DHCPv6 hostname injection that produced stored XSS in LuCI. No in-the-wild exploitation has been reported. A stack buffer sized for convenience instead of the protocol becomes the entire attack surface.

    Post summary

CVE-2026-53921 is a stack buffer overflow in odhcpd that can be exploited with publicly available Python PoCs; there is no evidence of active exploitation and no patch is mentioned.
