🚨 #ALERT — MICROSOFT ACTIVE DIRECTORY DOMAIN SERVICES: UNAUTHENTICATED REMOTE CODE EXECUTION THREAT
October 13, 2026
DISCLOSED BY: Microsoft Security Response Center
PRODUCT: Windows Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS)
CVE: CVE-2026-70229
SEVERITY: CRITICAL — Microsoft rating
CVSS 3.1: 8.1
WEAKNESS: CWE-863 — Incorrect Authorization
AFFECTED VERSIONS:
Affected Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025 installations, including applicable Server Core releases.
Microsoft also lists affected Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds.
Actual exposure depends on the vulnerable functionality being present and reachable.
IMPACT:
Incorrect authorization controls in Active Directory Domain Services could allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute code over a network.
Successful exploitation could compromise the affected system’s confidentiality, integrity and availability.
EXPOSURE:
Network attack vector.
No attacker credentials required.
No user interaction required.
Attack complexity is HIGH. Specific exploitation conditions must be satisfied.
EXPLOITATION STATUS:
VENDOR-CONFIRMED REMOTE CODE EXECUTION VULNERABILITY.
Microsoft assesses future exploitation as MORE LIKELY.
No confirmed in-the-wild exploitation or verified working public PoC identified.
The vulnerability’s potential impact must not be confused with evidence of actual domain-controller compromise.
Forensic triage:
Prioritize domain controllers and other systems hosting AD DS functionality.
Review abnormal directory-service activity, unexpected service failures, suspicious network requests and unauthorized process execution.
Correlate available Windows security, system and endpoint telemetry.
No CVE-specific malicious IOCs have been confirmed.
URGENT ACTION:
Deploy Microsoft’s October 13 security updates.
Verify applicable fixed builds:
Windows Server 2016: 14393.9612
Windows Server 2019: 17763.9376
Windows Server 2022: 20348.5761
Windows Server 2025: 26100.33650
Apply the corresponding updates for older supported server releases and affected Windows clients.
Restrict unnecessary access to directory services and investigate suspicious historical activity.
