🔥 CyberForge CVE of the Day #029 🚨 CVE-2026-76218 — GitPython has patched a High-severity conditional RCE affecting versions 3.1.57 and earlier. A vulnerable application that forwards attacker-controlled options into `Repo.init()` can be tricked into using a malicious Git template. Git then copies an executable hook into the new repository, where a later Git operation can trigger arbitrary code with the privileges of the host application or CI/CD worker. 🔑 Key details: ⭐ Severity: High ⭐ CVSS v3.1: 7.5 ⭐ CVSS v4.0: 7.7 ⭐ CWE-88: Argument Injection ⭐ Authentication: Low privileges in the scored scenario ⭐ User interaction: None ⭐ Public PoC: Yes — included in the official vendor advisory ⭐ Active exploitation: None confirmed ⭐ CISA KEV: Not listed ⭐ EPSS: Not yet available ⚠️ Important distinction: GitPython does not expose its own network service, and merely having a vulnerable version installed does not prove remote exploitability. The complete chain requires: 1️⃣ An application that uses `Repo.init()` 2️⃣ Attacker influence over the Git-init options 3️⃣ A malicious template accessible to the service 4️⃣ A later Git action that activates the planted hook 💥 Potential impact: Successful exploitation could expose source code, repository credentials, cloud tokens, signing material, build artefacts and deployment secrets—making CI/CD workers and repository-provisioning services especially valuable targets. 🛡️ Defensive action: ✅ Upgrade to GitPython 3.1.58 or later ✅ Prefer the current 3.1.59 release ✅ Rebuild containers, virtual environments and CI runners ✅ Never pass raw user-controlled dictionaries into GitPython ✅ Never enable `allow_unsafe_options=True` for untrusted input ✅ Monitor unexpected `.git/hooks` creation and suspicious child processes after Git activity ✅ Treat repository templates as executable code 🕰️ Curious timeline: The patch and GitPython 3.1.58 arrived on 4 August, but the CVE was not publicly registered until 19 August. 🔗 Full technical advisory, PoC awareness and patch details: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-9rj7-rf2p-w77r 🔗 Full vulnerability details: https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-76218 #CyberForge #CVEOfTheDay #CVE202676218 #GitPython #Python #RCE #GitHooks #DevSecOps #CICD #SupplyChainSecurity #CyberSecurity
