🚨 CRITICAL CVE — A NEW 9.9-SEVERITY STACK OVERFLOW WAS PUBLISHED TODAY FOR TOTOLINK NR1800X ROUTERS CVE-2026-82616 is remotely reachable, needs no user interaction and the public vulnerability record already references exploit material. Thread ↓ 1/ CVE-2026-82616 affects: TOTOLINK NR1800X Firmware: `9.1.0u.6681_B20230703` CVSS v3.1: 9.9 CRITICAL CVSS v4: 9.4 CRITICAL Published: August 31, 2026. 2/ The vulnerable path is: `/cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi` inside: `setUploadSetting` The vulnerable input is: `FileName`. An oversized/crafted value can trigger a stack-based buffer overflow. 3/ Attack model: Network access ↓ authenticated low-privilege access ↓ crafted request ↓ malicious `FileName` ↓ stack memory corrupted ↓ potential control-flow impact / code execution. No victim click is required. 4/ Important: This is NOT an unauthenticated RCE. The CVSS vector contains: `PR:L` meaning LOW privileges are required. That distinction matters when prioritizing exposure. 5/ But the impact remains severe. The CVSS metrics indicate HIGH potential impact to: Confidentiality Integrity Availability. And the vulnerability record references publicly available exploit research. 6/ At the time of the vulnerability data I checked, a fixed firmware version was NOT clearly identified. That makes exposure reduction especially important. 7/ Defender action: Inventory NR1800X routers. ↓ Check exact firmware. ↓ Do not expose management interfaces publicly. ↓ Restrict administration to trusted networks/VPN. ↓ Review access logs. ↓ Apply vendor firmware immediately when remediation is available. 8/ Internet routers remain an extremely valuable attack surface. Compromise can provide: persistent network presence traffic visibility pivoting proxy infrastructure DNS manipulation access to internal systems. 9/ CyberSignal insight: A router does not need to hold your files to become strategically valuable. Control the device that moves the traffic — and you control where the traffic can go. Sources: MITRE · NVD · Tenable · CVE-2026-82616
